Why Does the Check Engine Light Turn On?
When the check engine light turns on, it means that something is wrong. As frustrating as it might be, that's about the extent of the information that it will give you. This is why a special code reader is necessary. According to one source, the three most common causes for a check engine light to turn on include bad oxygen sensors, ignition problems, and a bad catalytic converter. But before you schedule an appointment, you might want to check the fourth most common reason: a loose gas cap. If your check engine light turns on, try removing your gas cap and inspecting it. If there are cracks or other issues that prevent the cap from making a good seal, simply replacing it might turn off the check engine light. However, you may still need to get the CEL reset, and that's best done at a dealership service center like ours. Of course, before buying a new gas cap and hoping, it's still better to know for sure why the CEL light came on.
One extra word of caution. Though a solid check engine light usually isn't an emergency, a flashing check engine light is a different story. This means that there's a more serious problem like a misfire. If you keep driving with a misfiring car, it could damage your catalytic converter, which is a costly component to replace. If the light is flashing, pull over as soon as it's safe to do so and shut off your vehicle. Then, call for a tow truck.
