In April 2019, Volkswagen announced that it was working on a long-rumored 400-horsepower variant of its Golf R hatchback. This secret model is being developed alongside the standard version of the Golf R at the Volkswagen headquarters in Germany. Keep reading to learn what to expect from this potentially range-topping vehicle.

Powerful Engine

Early plans for the Volkswagen include an upgraded version of the EA888 engine, which is also found in the GTI, Jetta GLI, and standard Golf R. This 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will produce between 380 and 400 horsepower, although there are no current plans for a hybrid assist. The vehicle will  also come standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. Preliminary plans show the vehicle will be able to go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 174 miles per hour.

Similar Features

As mentioned, this vehicle is still in the concept phase, so the details are still being worked out. It will reportedly use technology and features found in the seventh-generation Golf R400 and Golf TCR race car, developed by Volkswagen Motorsport. Plans also show the vehicle will be a five-door model, with a possible Plus version in the same body style coming later, pending production approval.

Originally introduced as a concept car in 2015, the newest Volkswagen Golf R should hit the market in 2020. If you have any additional questions about this vehicle, contact the friendly sales team at Archer Volkswagen.
