We've all had spills before. No matter how careful you are, sometimes drinks get knocked over. If a spilled beverage has caused the carpeting in your Volkswagen to become wet, there's no cause for concern. But if nobody has spilled anything and you find a wet spot, it's a good idea to bring your VW in for inspection and service.

At Archer Volkswagen, we're glad to provide lots of informative articles about your VW car or SUV. That's why you'll find a list of possible causes for wet carpet below. But whatever the cause, getting it fixed is important. After all, dealing with mildew can make every drive unpleasant.

4. A Clogged Sunroof Drain

If your Volkswagen is not equipped with a sunroof, you can skip this point--we assure you that it isn't causing your problem! But if you do have a sunroof on your VW, be sure to check the drains. There's a drainage system around the sunroof that makes sure any excess water doesn't get into the cabin. If it's clogged, the water may begin to overflow, finding its way in through the edges of the sunroof.

3. Damaged Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is another name for the seals around your vehicle's windows, doors, and windshield. This weatherstripping keeps water out. However, it's possible for these seals to get damaged. Whether they develop small cracks or start to come loose, even a small amount of damage can let water in.

2. Clogged A/C Drain

"At least it's a dry heat" is something that you're not likely to hear in Houston. We have plenty of humidity to deal with, and the A/C system in your VW has to help mitigate that. It collects the humidity that's inside your vehicle and drains it onto the ground. However, a clogged A/C drain can cause the collected water from the air to overflow inside the vehicle. Fixing a clogged drain is relatively complex, so we recommend letting the experts take care of this one.

1. A Leaking Heater Core

In an excellent example of resourcefulness, the heater in your VW uses the cooling system to keep you warm. When you turn on the heat, the heater core takes coolant that has absorbed engine heat and circulates it through the dash. Then, the HVAC fans blow this hot air through the vents and into the cabin. If this core is leaking, it may not be water at all that's getting on the carpet, but coolant. Its sweet smell can be a giveaway. Since the heater core is generally located on the passenger's side of the vehicle, you may notice that the leak is contained to that side.
