The city of Houston has a little something for everyone who enjoys things to see that are unique. There are quirky destinations for nature lovers and fans of unique art.

Waugh Drive Bat Colony

The colony is under the Waugh Drive Bridge near Buffalo Bayou. If you enjoy watching bats, the best time to arrive is just before dusk. There is a viewing deck for safe viewing. Do not use camera flashes as they first come out. Make sure you don’t touch any bats that are on the ground, they are either sick or still learning to fly.

The Beer Can House

One of the many quirky pieces of art in Houston is the Beer Can House. A retired Southern Pacific Railroad upholsterer initially started it in 1968. You can drive by it or, to see all of the unique aspects, you can tour the house. Admission costs $5 for adults, and children under 12 are free. The house is open on the weekends for tours weather permitting.

The Eclectic Menagerie Park

For more unique art pieces, make your way over to The Eclectic Menagerie Park. It is on the edge of a 108-acre pipe yard at 288 South and Bellfort Street. Most of the art in this open-air museum is from local artists. Some of the pieces are painted; others are left as raw metal.

As you explore these destinations, bring your camera to capture them. Remember to ask about photography policies. Bring your friends so they can also see these quirky Houston locations.
