The engine in your Volkswagen is the result of precision engineering. But even VW engineering can't keep engines from losing power and efficiency over time if they're not treated well. Fortunately, there are steps you can take in order to help your engine give you its best, year after year. Keep reading to find four helpful steps you can take!

4. Replace the Engine Air Filter

Both the cabin and the engine have air filters in your vehicle. In the same way that the cabin air filter protects your breathing environment in the cabin, the engine air filter protects the engine. Engines need a steady flow of air to function, but debris and sediment can damage the inner workings of the engine. The filter keeps these things out. But over time the filter can become clogged, decreasing your vehicle's power and its fuel efficiency. This is because the engine has to work harder to get the same power, due to a lack of air. Replacing this filter can help the engine get a fresh, clean supply once again.

3. Don't Ignore Problems

There are a number of ways your vehicle's engine may alert you to any problems it has. Whether it's a Check Engine Light, a strange sound from the engine compartment, or a drop in engine power, these things should always be paid attention to. Failing to respond to these in time may cause the engine to fall into greater disrepair, whereas taking care of them immediately could mean that your engine is easier to fix.

2. Check the Fluids

Engine oil and coolant are vital to your engine's functioning, and they're relatively easy to check on your own. To check the oil, find the dipstick and remove it from the engine. Wipe it down, and then replace it. Pull it out again and check the oil level; it should be higher than the minimum line on the dipstick. Checking the coolant is even easier! Simply find the reservoir, which should be translucent. Look at the levels and make sure that the fluid is between the minimum and maximum lines.

1. Get Oil Changes

We know that you probably get told time and time again how important oil changes are, but it's true. They're one of the most vital services you can get for your engine, and regular oil changes will keep your VW performing much better for years to come. If you only change your oil a little later than necessary, you may not notice any changes right away. But as the years go by, your engine's lifespan could be shortened, and greater damage could occur.
